Any time a building owner is considering a new roof coating for their roof, they have a tough choice to make between either acrylic or silicone roof coatings. There are some reasons why you might want to choose an acrylic over silicone and vice versa. Let’s compare the two coatings.
Acrylic or Silicone?
The most common reason we hear as to why building owners choose acrylics when comparing between acrylic or silicone is that the material is less expensive. While this is generally true, per gallon acrylics do tend to be less expensive, the overall project cost has the potential to be higher with an acrylic coating for two reasons:
The roof needs to be primed.
In many scenarios where you’d install an acrylic coating, you need to prime the roof before the coating can go down. This could increase labor and material costs.
More material is required.
For most jobs, an acrylic coating has to go on thicker than a silicone coating which means you might pay more for material on the job.
When Silicone Works Best
Silicone coatings are your best choice for a roof that is in good structural condition, but is either out of warranty or needs a “face-lift”. In other words, the roof can still remain on the building without posing a safety threat, but it is leaking, sagging, or some other problem. As long as the roof is mostly dry, a silicone coating is a great fit for the building.
