DO YOU KNOW THE TRUE MEANING OF ELASTOMERIC ROOF COATINGS?
Acrylic coatings were the first, most popular roof coating to be used as a roof restoration product. For this reason, much of the terminology associated with roof coatings is attached to acrylics. Many people assume all coatings share the same properties as acrylics (untrue). Many people also assume that because acrylic coatings were called elastomeric in the past, that elastomeric means acrylic. However, as we’ll examine in this post, elastomeric does not refer only to acrylic roof coatings. Let’s look at exactly what is meant when people say elastomeric roof coatings.
What Are Elastomeric Roof Coatings?
The official definition of elastomeric is “An elastic substance”. The definition goes on to say the material can occur naturally or synthetically. So, if elastomeric simply means an elastic substance, then any material that is elastic can be described as elastomeric. Therefore, any roof coating that maintains elastic properties is an elastomeric roof coating. Whether it’s acrylic, urethane, silicone, or another material. If it is elastic in nature, it is elastomeric.
Why Does the Terminology Matter?
Is this just a tomato-tomahto issue, or does it indeed matter what we call an elastomeric roof coating? We would argue that it does matter, especially if the audience knows the true definition of elastomeric. Many people often refer to acrylics as elastomeric and other coatings as non-elastomeric. This is an inaccurate way to describe the coatings, and can be misleading. Silicone is far more elastic in nature once cured than any other roof coating. This is actually one of the benefits provided by silicone roof coatings. So, to call silicone a non-elastomeric roof coating is in fact misleading, whether intentional or not.
How Are Elastomeric Roof Coatings Used?
Elastomeric roof coatings are used to restore, rather than replace, aged roofs. They are used to prevent leaks, provide reflectivity, longer lifespan, and other benefits for roofs already in place. Elastomeric roof coatings provide all these things for significantly less money than a roof replacement. Whether urethane, acrylic, silicone or another material, elastomeric roof coatings are used as a roof restoration project.
Elastomeric roof coatings is a category of products, not a specific family. Elastomeric can be used to describe many different types of coatings. The term doesn’t strictly refer to acrylics or any other material. This is important because elastomeric describes the very nature of the material and the benefits it provides.
